The Hellenic Association for Energy Economics is officially joining the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy and other major players of the energy industry, at the 28th United Nations Convention on Climate Change.

The HAEE team is thrilled to support and actively participate in this year’s world biggest and most significant Conference for climate change, environment and energy, by co-hosting with the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy, the Side Event “Outlook of the Greek Energy Sector towards 2030”, at the Greek Pavilion on 5/12 from 13:30 to 15:00 (GST)."

Event Narrative:

As we step into the future, the Greek energy market is undergoing a profound transformation. This change is driven by the introduction of cutting-edge technologies, such as energy storage systems and offshore wind farms ushering in a new era of possibilities. Moreover, this transformation is outlined in the revamped NECP (National Energy and Climate Plan), which was recently updated with new projections for the future of the Greek energy landscape. This updated plan carries the potential to propel Greece into a sustainable, clean energy future, setting ambitious targets for 2030 and even beyond, up to 2050.

What to expect from COP28

With only a week remaining until the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), which will be held in the UAE, let's take a look at what we can expect to see on the Agenda.

COP28 comes at a pivotal moment for 2030 and 2050 climate commitments. Over the last years, the world witnessed record-breaking climate events that sounded the alarm for global leaders to review their commitments about carbon emissions, fossil fuel use and enable the establishment of a global market for carbon, since the first stocktake’s of progress technical findings proved that that current climate and energy policies have reached the worst-case scenario of 4°C to 6°C of warming by 2100. Dramatically increasing climate finance and accelerating the energy transition need to remain top priorities as the world copes with mounting temperatures and unprecedented natural disasters.

To hold on to Paris Agreement goals, nations need to ‘operationalize’ Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, establishing a ‘Loss and Damage Fund’ for developing countries and most vulnerable to climate change impacts countries, contributing to nations’ adaptive capacity to stand for people, and ecosystems. The Fund needs to be accompanied by global goals on climate adaptation, and financial support for it, especially for those who rely on fossil fuel economies.

COP28 will play a unique role in the Middle East, where resilience to extreme heat, food insecurity, and water scarcity are crucial, particularly in the oil and gas producing nation. The upcoming Conference presents a crucial opportunity for the oil and gas sector to participate in climate negotiations in a positive manner. The industry can take collective actions, including methane abatement and carbon management, that will enable it to contribute to the transition to a net-zero emissions energy system and support climate progress, rather than hinder it.

What we really expect this year from the global community is to take bold actions, introduce common standards and allow developing countries to be equally represented in negotiations and policy-making, improve accountability and create economic opportunity for people, communities, and businesses, while moving forward to net-zero transition. Uptake of RES, energy efficiency, electrification, decarbonization of heavy-emitting sectors through advancing technologies is expected to lead up the discussion during the Conference.
