Chart of the Month Vol. 38 | "Employment in the Energy Sector" | Powered by Deloitte

The global energy transition is not only transforming energy systems but also reshaping labour markets. The latest Chart of the Month Vol.38 highlights the rapid expansion of employment across the global energy sector, driven primarily by the growth of clean energy technologies, electrification, and infrastructure development.

Renewable energy employment alone reached 16.6 million jobs worldwide in 2024, reflecting continued expansion of the sector. Solar photovoltaics account for the largest share of these jobs, representing 44% of global renewable energy employment, followed by biofuels, hydropower, and wind energy. These figures demonstrate that the energy transition is already generating substantial employment opportunities across multiple technologies and value chains.

Looking ahead, employment in the energy supply sector within the European Union is projected to grow significantly. Between 2022 and 2035, the number of jobs in the sector is expected to increase by 19.6%, reflecting the scale of investments required for new infrastructure, energy system modernisation, and decarbonisation efforts. Notably, Greece is expected to experience even stronger growth, with energy sector employment projected to rise by over 52.9% during the same period.

As the energy transition progresses, workforce development, reskilling initiatives, and targeted education programmes will be essential to ensure that labour supply keeps pace with the rapidly evolving demands of the energy system.
