Greece’s electricity interconnections are rapidly transforming the country from a traditionally import-dependent market into an emerging regional power exporter. As highlighted in HAEE’s latest Chart of the Month, 2025 marks a historic shift, with Greece recording net electricity exports of more than 3 TWh—the first substantial export surplus in decades. This evolution reflects both the country’s expanding domestic generation capacity and the growing strategic importance of its cross-border infrastructure.
Currently interconnected with Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Albania, Italy, and Turkey, Greece has established itself as a key balancing and trading hub in Southeast Europe. These existing links enhance supply security, improve market flexibility, and support broader European energy integration.
At the same time, an ambitious pipeline of eight new interconnection projects—including strategic links to Egypt, Cyprus-Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Germany—positions Greece at the center of a wider geopolitical energy corridor connecting Europe to the Eastern Mediterranean, North Africa, and the Middle East.
As renewable deployment accelerates and regional electricity demand evolves, Greece’s interconnections are no longer merely infrastructure assets—they are becoming strategic instruments of economic influence, energy resilience, and long-term regional leadership.
