Chart of the Month Vol. 41 | "Connecting to the Future: Grid Investments" | Powered by Deloitte

Grid infrastructure is rapidly emerging as the backbone of the global energy transition. As electrification accelerates and renewable energy sources expand, transmission and distribution networks must scale accordingly—both in capacity and complexity.

Recent projections show a steady increase in global power line capacity through 2060, accompanied by a parallel rise in system costs. This reflects the capital-intensive nature of grid expansion, where investments are no longer incremental but structural. The shift is particularly evident in major economies such as the United States and China, which dominate global grid spending due to both system size and policy ambition. Europe, while trailing in absolute terms, demonstrates a growing but more fragmented investment landscape.

At the national level, Greece is entering a decisive phase. The investment trajectory of Independent Power Transmission Operator signals a clear transition from moderate upgrades to large-scale infrastructure deployment. Annual investments are set to exceed €1 billion by 2026, while cumulative spending is projected to reach €6 billion by 2034.

This front-loaded acceleration reflects strategic priorities: integrating renewables, strengthening interconnections, and enhancing system resilience. Ultimately, the data highlights a critical reality—without sustained and coordinated grid investment, the pace of the energy transition will remain constrained.
