The new energy geopolitics at the heart of the 11th HAEE Energy Transition Symposium

For the 11th consecutive year,  the HAEE Energy Transition Symposium, which took place in Athens, was completed with great success, bringing together leading representatives of politics, academia, industry, financial institutions and the international energy market.

Over three days, the conference was once again a reference point for the energy dialogue, focusing on geopolitical developments, energy security, financing the green transition, infrastructure, energy storage, network development and new technologies that shape the future of the energy market.

The first day of the Symposium, which began at the central auditorium of Alba Graduate Business School, The American College of Greece, with the greeting of Edward C. Wingenbach, Ph,D, President, The American College of Greece, was dedicated to academic presentations, highlighting research activity and new scientific approaches around energy transition, sustainability, energy markets, networks and innovation.

During the next two days, at the Goulandris National Museum of Natural History, renowned speakers from Greece and abroad analyzed the changing geopolitical map of energy, pointing out that energy security has now evolved into a strategic issue directly linked to economic stability, competitiveness and international cooperation.

The Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou, the Special Envoy of the U.S. Department of Energy Joshua Volz and the Secretary General of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF) Osama Mobarez highlighted the importance of regional cooperation and strategic infrastructure to shield Europe against geopolitical turbulence.

Particular emphasis was placed on the role of Greece as an emerging energy hub in Southeastern Europe and the strategic importance of interconnections and the Vertical Corridor. Discussions were held on this topic, where the Secretary General of Energy and Mineral Resources, Despina Paliarouta participated, among others.

A significant part of the discussions focused on the challenges posed by the rapid penetration of renewables, with an emphasis on production curtailments, the need to accelerate investments in grids and storage, as well as the creation of a stable investment frameworks.

Representatives of the renewable energy market and financial institutions underlined that the energy transition is now entering a more complex and demanding phase, where system flexibility, digitalization, smart infrastructure and storage will be critical factors in maintaining security of supply and competitiveness.

The Symposium hosted important international interventions around energy diplomacy and international cooperation, with the participation  of the Ambassador of Moldova Andrei Popov, the Ambassador of the  United Kingdom Matthew Lodge, the Ambassador of the Netherlands Barbara Van Hellemond, the Ambassador of  Sweden Håkan Emsgård, the Ambassador of France Laurence Auer, Zhang Gang, Minister Counsellor & Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China and Eugen-Ioan Dobreanu, Deputy Head of Mission, at the Embassy of Romania, who referred to the importance of international partnerships to strengthen energy resilience, industrial competitiveness and green growth.

The focus was also on storage technologies, investments in LNG, new natural gas markets, alternative fuels such as hydrogen and biomethane, as well as the prospects of the circular economy and climate resilience.

Particular reference was also made to the importance of human resources and education in the new energy era, with the speakers pointing out that the skills of the future will require a combination of technical knowledge, digital specialization and strategic thinking.

An important moment of the three-day Symposium was the presentation of the HAEE Greek Energy Market Report 2026, where the main trends of the Greek and European energy markets were highlighted, with an emphasis on the geopolitical dimension of the energy transition, regional cooperation and the need to strengthen energy infrastructure.

Central to the success of the Symposium was the strategic partnership of leading international organizations and academic institutions. In particular, the contribution of the HELLENiQ ENERGY Center for Sustainability and Energy @Alba Graduate Business School, Columbia University | SIPA, S&P Global Energy, the International Energy Agency, as well as the Global Gas Center, provided high added value with their specialized interventions. The Youth Climate Diplomacy Forum and Energynomics also actively participated in the conference, while the American-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce, which contributed decisively to the promotion of bilateral strategic relations, as well as the Hellenic-French Chamber of Commerce, had a particularly dynamic and special presence.

The Symposium concluded with the ceremony of the HAEE Energy Initiative Awards 2026, which highlighted initiatives, organizations and projects that contribute substantially to the formation of the new energy landscape in Greece and Europe.

Driven by energy security, innovation, sustainability and geopolitical resilience, the awards highlighted actions that accelerate the energy transition through investments in clean technologies, strategic infrastructure, digitalization, energy storage and new forms of public-private cooperation.

The awards night confirmed that the energy transition is not only an environmental priority, but requires a broader strategic transformation that impacts Greece's economy, industry, investment, and position on Europe's new geopolitical energy map.
