New data shows that global transmission capacity is set to expand steadily through 2060, with costs rising in parallel. This signals a fundamental shift: grid infrastructure is becoming one of the most capital-intensive pillars of the energy system.

Investment is highly concentrated. The US and China lead by a wide margin, while Europe follows with smaller but increasing contributions. The pattern reflects both scale and policy urgency, as countries race to electrify and integrate renewables.

Greece is now entering its own investment surge. The latest projections from the Independent Power Transmission Operator show annual spending surpassing €1 billion by 2026, with total investments reaching €6 billion by 2034.

This marks a clear shift from gradual upgrades to large-scale transformation. Interconnections, system resilience, and renewable integration are at the core of this effort.
