The GREGY Interconnector

The Project foresees the Electrical Interconnection of the Egyptian and Greek Power Systems through two pairs of submarine cables and High Voltage Direct Current Link (HVDC, 500kV) with a capacity of 3,000 MW and the capability of bidirectional power transmission. The project aims to transfer 100% clean energy produced from RES in Egypt, capturing the high-capacity factors in the area. The green energy that will come from Egypt will be used partially for consumption by the Greek industry, partially for the production of green H2 in the country and for export to European countries.

The Project will contribute to the green transition while reducing the dependency of Europe on energy produced from fossil fuels and on Russian gas. The Project can replace up to 26 TWh of electricity from natural gas units, which corresponds to 37 TWh of natural gas consumption for electricity generation, i.e. ~ 4.5 bcm.

HAEE event: "The role of RES and Natural Gas in the New Energy Model of Greece with REPowerEU"

The Hellenic Association for Energy Economics organized with great success the conference entitled "The role of RES and Natural Gas in the New Energy Model of Greece with REPowerEU", on Thursday, 7 July 2022, at the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI).

With the announcement of REPowerEU by the European Commission, the new plan to rapidly phase out Russian gas and accelerate the green transition is officially launched.
