Dear members and friends, The new Chart of the Month Vol.40 is out! Across Europe, waste management is shifting away from landfills toward a more balanced system that combines recycling and energy recovery. Thermal treatment of residual waste has steadily increased over the past decade, reflecting a structural move toward efficiency and circularity. But Greece tells a different story. As of 2023, around 80% of municipal waste is still landfilled, while only 2% is used for energy recovery. Recycling remains relatively limited, highlighting a significant gap compared to European averages. This gap is more than environmental—it’s strategic. Expanding waste-to-energy infrastructure could reduce landfill dependence, recover valuable energy, and strengthen energy system resilience. It would also bring Greece closer to EU waste directives and decarbonisation targets. The “Chart of the Month” is a HAEE publication, powered by Deloitte. The HAEE Team
