The Hellenic Association for Energy Economics is happy to announce that the 8th HAEE Energy Transition Symposium “Rethinking Energy: The new state of play for a secure and sustainable future” will be held from Wednesday, 10 May to Friday, 12 May 2023 in Athens. For yet another year, the annual Symposium will serve as an open-dialogue platform, where state, academia and private sector representatives will contribute to debates and exchange of views on the most crucial energy matters.

As the world suffrages through a global energy crisis, a shock of unprecedented breadth and complexity is unfolding. While markets were pressured before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russia's actions have transformed a rapid economic recovery from the pandemic - which strained global supply chains, among them energy - into a full-blown energy crisis.

Governments, policymakers, academics and industry experts need to reconsider their strategic priorities, while the “security of supply, affordability, and sustainability” trilemma is more topical than ever. At the Sharm el-Sheikh Climate Change Conference (COP 27) global community renews its commitments to promote energy systems' resilience and foster their transformation. While short-term energy security focuses on the ability of the energy system to react quickly to sudden changes in the balance between supply and demand, long-term energy security is primarily concerned with timely investments to supply energy in line with economic developments and environmental needs.

In this direction, the emergence of new energy technologies, the expanded use of renewable energy sources, hydrogen technologies, CCS, energy storage, electrified transport, and electrified heat to address the problem of energy supply adequacy, climate change and environmental protection have become imperative.

In addition to the environmental case for clean energy, the economic case for cost-competitive and affordable clean technologies is now even stronger - as is the case for energy security. The alignment of economic, climate and security priorities is necessary to achieve progress and development in research, innovation and thus human evolution itself.

Driven by the facts and our intention to apply rigorous analysis to the most pertinent topics of energy economics, HAEE is welcoming the 8th edition of the HAEE Energy Transition Symposium, in the light of the new geopolitical landscape and towards a historic turning point into cleaner and more secure energy systems.

Stay tuned for more!
