EDITORIAL

The energy transition and decarbonization continued unabated during 2018 both in Greece and globally. Within this particularly dynamic landscape, Hellenic Association for Energy Economics (HAEE) believes not only that traditional players need to modernize and adapt, but newer ones also need to maintain their competitive edge and innovate in order to stay viable.

In other words, the energy transition is not a process during which a player may rest on previous successes, since technological evolution and market transformation are constant and require continuous care and reflexes.

All the above are reflected in the new Greek energy plan that the Energy ministry presented and foresees at least 4-5 crucial developments for the next decade. One of them is the further rise of renewables to levels above 20%, which translates to new challenges, formerly unheard of. Another one is electric mobility that promises to decarbonize transportation and will require a massive conscience change. There are also the new power and gas markets, but also energy storage, which is expected to make its first steps after 2025.

There may be many challenges, but in our country there is also significant know how and experienced professionals to carry out the difficult task ahead. HAEE is here in order to support this effort with all its abilities and enhance the energy dialogue through a plethora of publications and events.

In 2018 HAEE organized multiple conferences and productive meetings of national and international significance.

On February 5th, HAEE in conjunction with the National Bank of Greece (NBG) organized an event presenting the financial tools available to companies active in the energy sector. The event was held at the Old Athens Stock Exchange. Heads of more than 120 leading companies of the sector participated in the event.

On March 22nd, HAEE in collaboration with the financial directory of the portal insider.gr -and under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment & Energy and the Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport and Networks- organized the 1st EcoMobility Conference. During the Conference the institutional framework for natural gas and electric powered vehicles, infrastructure, business and investment opportunities, financial tools and the utility of alternative sources of energy in augmenting the competitiveness of businesses were analyzed.

From May 3rd to May 5th HAEE organized, under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, the 3rd International Conference on Energy Economics titled “Energy Transition: European and Global Perspectives” with over 100 presentations, 25 panels, more than 400 participants and numerous heads of leading energy companies participating.

Additionally, on September 7th HAEE -in collaboration with Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce- organized the international Southeast Europe Energy Forum.

The Forum was held in Thessaloniki -one day before the Thessaloniki International Fair- and focused on the energy sector and means of cooperation between Greece and its neighboring countries.

The closing months of 2018 were particularly productive for HAEE since it co-organized twice with the Athens Exchange Group a seminar titled: Natural Gas Market | The Essentials & Introduction to Power Exchange Concept: Markets & Products, which was held on October 22&23 and again on November 19 & 20. The participants were informed about the latest developments and investment opportunities in the domestic and European Natural Gas market.

Lastly, HAEE also published in 2018 the first Policy Paper in greek titled “Overview and international developments in electricity market” analyzing the international developments in the field of electrical energy with the goal of creating a tool to help the discussion about basic energy policy and long-term energy planning.

HAEE is of to a dynamic start in 2019. In collaboration with the financial department of the site insider.gr, HAEE - under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment & Energy and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport - will organize the 2nd EcoMobility Conference which will be held on January 22nd.
